The Elementary Program is divided into Lower Elementary (6-9 years old) and Upper Elementary (9-12 years old) classrooms. Students must have been in a primary Montessori environment prior to attending the Elementary Program.
The multi-age groupings in the classroom allow for an enriched programme at varied, individualized levels and provide more options for the student’s learning. The various ages also create a rich and dynamic social environment of shared inquiry and collaboration, meeting a key element in the developmental needs of the Elementary-age child.
The Elementary Curriculum is one that utilizes the child’s faculty of imagination in order to inspire and refine knowledge and skills. Having a solid foundation in reading, writing, arithmetic, geometry, and culture, the Elementary child is now ready to delve into the “Why?” and “How?” of all things, driven by a zealous desire to make sense of the universe and discover his or her role in it. The prepared Montessori environment offers a vast wealth of information to the child, facilitating and maximizing independent learning and exploration.
Freedom and responsibility are exercised in the classroom, enabling students to cultivate independence and their ability to choose while simultaneously imparting the importance of social responsibility and fairness.
In the Elementary classroom, students do not merely learn, but they develop the skills that teach them how to learn on their own.
