Bannockburn | Leading in Montessori Education

Environmental Learning

At Bannockburn, the outdoor environment plays an important role in the lives of the children.

Putting the children in touch with the wonders of our earth and helping them take responsibility for its care is an important part of our role as educators. Maria Montessori was an environmentalist over one hundred years ago, and Bannockburn is committed to carrying on her passion in this area.

The school is fortunate to have a beautiful expanse of green space, with sloping fields and mature trees. At recess, the children can be seen raking leaves, shovelling snow, digging in the sand pit or collecting leaves and wild flowers.

Regular nature-themed field trips also offer an experience in which the children can learn about different topics. We travel to apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and conservation areas, and plant trees as well.

In recent years, the Parents Association financially supported the creation of an outdoor gardening area for each class. The children plant bulbs and perennials, and then eagerly await the arrival of spring to see the fruits of their labour.
